Under-19 rep squad announced for WRFL clash

The Northern Football League has announced its under-19 representative squad for the 2017 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships.

Forty-five players have been selected in the squad ahead of the NFL’s clash with the Western Region Football League on Saturday May 13.

The squad, which features players from as many as 19 NFL clubs, contains a host of players who have played senior football in the NFL over the past few years.

Included in the squad are Heidelberg midfielder Lachlan Wilson, who was best afield in the Tigers’ senior grand final win last year, exciting Banyule midfielder Artan Cabdi and South Morang duo Jordan Steele and James Hewson.

Players were selected based on nominations from their club. The squad is a true under-19s squad and only players who are born in 1998 or earlier are eligible.

Three-time Greensborough under-19 premiership mentor Rod Cann will again coach the NFL under-19 representative side this year.

Cann successfully led the NFL to an 85-point win over the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League last year.

“Once again I’m looking forward to it, particularly against a different opposition and with a different group of players,” Cann said.

“It’s an exciting time for the players and it’s a great opportunity for them to put their hand up.

“Some of the group of players selected last year just goes to show what they can do beyond that game with the experience they picked up from the opportunity of playing at a higher level.”
