Junior Review – Round 4

A look back at the weekend’s junior results as teams took to the field for Round 4 of the 2017 NFL junior season.

Montmorency continued its unbeaten start in the Under-18 Girls competition, defeating South Morang by 29 points at Mill Park Lakes Reserve. Greensborough made it three wins in a row with a big away win over Wallan. In a much closer affair, Hurstbridge defeated Eltham by just one point in a low-scoring game, where the Bridges closed the gap late with a goal in the final quarter. Darebin was the other winner for the round, easily accounting for Yarrambat.

The Under-17 Blue competition saw South Morang make it three wins on the trot in a dominant performance against Greensborough at Mill Park Lakes Reserve. In other Round 4 matches Montmorency and Eltham Black both recorded comfortable wins away from home against Whittlesea and Mernda respectively.

Kilmore produced a dominant display in the Under-17 Red competition, holding Hurstbridge to one behind in a big win at J.J Clancy Reserve. Both West Preston-Lakeside and Research also recorded convincing wins at opposition venue, defeating Eltham Red and Mill Park respectively.

South Morang made it three wins in a row in the Under-16 Blue competition, defeating the previously unbeaten Mill Park at Mill Park Lakes Reserve. The Lions recording a 34-point win. Greensborough recorded their second win in a row when they defeated Mernda by 4 points, whilst Montmorency also scored a victory when it accounted for Yarrambat at Montmorency Park North Oval.

Diamond Creek remains undefeated in the Under-16 Red competition after producing another great display against Whittlesea at Coventry Oval. In a far tighter affair, Eltham produced a strong final term to pull away from Research and register a 28-point win. Only 10 points separated the two sides heading into the final quarter. Wallan was the other winners for the round after it scored a win over Thomastown at Main Street Reserve.

The Under-16 Girls competition saw Wallan come from behind to record an 11-point runaway win over Kilmore at Wallan Recreational Reserve. Trailing by one point at three-quarter time, the Magpies kept Kilmore to two behinds for the final term as they kicked clear to record their second win of the season. Laurimar continued its winning form, accounting for Diamond Creek Women’s at Laurimar Reserve, whilst Research also had a solid win over Mill Park at Redleap Reserve. West Preston-Lakeside and Yarrambat were the other winners for the round, defeating South Morang and Whittlesea respectively. The Roosters’ victory was a tight one, overcoming the Lions by just six points.

Mill Park and West Preston-Lakeside played out a thriller in the Under-15 Blue competition, with the Stallions continuing their unbeaten run with a nail-biting one-point win over the Roosters at J.E Moore Park. Research was also able to maintain its unbeaten streak, defeating Diamond Creek by 38 points. Eltham Black and Laurimar were the other winners of the round, recording tight wins over Mernda and Montmorency respectively.

Bundoora Park held off a final-quarter charge from Greensborough in the Under-15 Red competition, keeping its unbeaten start to the season intact with a seven-point win. Trailing by 21 points at the final break, the Boro outscored the Bolts by four goals to two in the final term, but ultimately, it wasn’t enough as the Bolts won their third match in a row. Yarrambat and Kilmore meanwhile both recorded comfortable wins over South Morang and Hurstbridge respectively.
